Dragon Ball Super solidifies Broly’s movie backstory as official manga canon

The Dragon Ball Super manga has finally embraced the backstory of Broly, cementing it as an official part of the manga’s canon.

In the latest chapter of Dragon Ball Super, a few key elements from the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film’s backstory are incorporated, effectively integrating this new iteration of Broly into the series’ continuity.

The opening pages of chapter #93 of Dragon Ball Super provide a quick recap of the events from the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film. It showcases Broly’s early life as a baby being banished by Vegeta’s father, his upbringing with his own father on a planetoid, his encounter with Cheelai and Lemo, and his eventual alliance with Frieza to travel to Earth, where Frieza cunningly kills Broly’s father. These details align perfectly with the film’s narrative, solidifying the film’s inclusion in the manga’s canon. While the film hasn’t received a complete adaptation in the manga like the ongoing Super Hero arc, Broly’s presence in Super Hero has prompted the manga to properly introduce the character to its readers by featuring the scenes where Goku trains with Broly on Beerus’ world.

This development in Dragon Ball Super establishes Broly’s revamped backstory as an integral part of the series. Initially created for the non-canonical Dragon Ball Z movies in the ’90s, Broly gained immense popularity despite the challenge of fitting his character into the overall continuity. For many years, Broly remained outside the canon until the release of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie in 2018, which presented a new origin story for the character, approved by Akira Toriyama himself, that seamlessly blended with Goku’s narrative. Broly has made appearances in the Dragon Ball Super manga prior to chapter #93, showcasing his new design, but without explicitly delving into his origins since the film was not fully adapted in the manga until now.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is widely regarded as one of the finest Dragon Ball films, and its integration into the official manga canon is undoubtedly a delightful sight for fans. While the film was touted as the canonical continuation of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime, previous claims of canonicity have sometimes been later retconned. However, the Broly movie benefitted from Toriyama’s involvement and even partially adapted and expanded upon a manga chapter penned by the mangaka himself—the Dragon Ball Minus chapter from Jaco the Galactic Patrolman—which explores Goku’s origins on Planet Vegeta, intertwining it with Broly’s story.

Although seemingly inconspicuous, Broly’s confirmation as canon in the manga opens up numerous possibilities for his future involvement in upcoming story arcs once the Super Hero adaptation concludes. With the formidable challenge of the new Black Frieza form looming over Goku and Vegeta, Broly could emerge as the powerful ally that the heroes of Dragon Ball Super desperately need.
