Assassination Classroom creator’s future plans for the series and its characters

The popular anime and manga series Assassination Classroom follows the story of a yellow, octopus-like creature named Koro-sensei who plans to destroy Earth within a year, unless he is stopped by a group of delinquent junior high school students who are tasked with assassinating him. With the anime and manga concluded, IGN had the chance to ask the series’ creator, Yusei Matsui, some questions during New York Comic Con. In the interview, Matsui discussed his experiences creating the series and revealed a few insights into what’s next for him and the Assassination Classroom kids.

When asked about his work experiences, Matsui described a recent autograph session at a bookstore where he was overwhelmed by the number of fans who showed up, and how it was cool to be able to influence the scenery in New York, even if just a bit. He went on to say that the worries and frustrations of the students in Assassination Classroom were universal, which only reinforced his belief in the power of the story he had created.

Matsui was then asked about how he came up with a character like Koro-sensei, and he explained that he needed a non-serious-looking form for students to have fun assassinating him. He also revealed that Koro-sensei’s design was recycled from an old scrapped project, which was fortunate for him since it fit perfectly with what he had in mind for his new series.

When asked about the English dub of the anime, Matsui expressed amazement at how similar the dub actors sounded to the original Japanese and how much passion they put into the adaptation. He was very happy with the result and felt that the adaptation was faithful to the original work.

Matsui also discussed his experiences working with Yoshio Sawai, a gag manga creator, who he says always tries to play things for laughs during everyday conversation. Matsui felt that his time working with Sawai allowed him to practice his sense of comedy, which he later incorporated into Assassination Classroom.

Finally, Matsui was asked about what he plans to do next, now that Assassination Classroom has concluded. He revealed that he has nothing planned at the moment and prefers to clear his head and wait for inspiration for his next project. However, he expressed interest in doing a follow-up series or spin-off for Assassination Classroom in the future, stating that while the original story is finished, the students’ lives are just beginning, and he’s interested in exploring the possibilities of their future.
