Viz Media corrects ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ chapter due to fan-discovered localization error

In the latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, fans were thrilled to witness the long-awaited return of Satoru Gojo. However, their excitement quickly turned into disappointment as they discovered that Viz Media’s English-language localization had marred one of the series’ most exhilarating moments. The controversy revolved around the 221st chapter titled “Gain and Loss,” which was released on April 23rd.

After being freed from Kenjaku’s prison realm, where he had been sealed for nearly 19 days, Gojo wasted no time in seeking out Kenjaku, the most evil jujutsu sorcerer in the world, who had taken possession of the body of Gojo’s late best friend, Suguru Geto. As Gojo approached the impostor, who was now known as “Pseudo-Geto,” his impending strike was abruptly interrupted by Megumi Fushiguro, who had fallen under Sukuna’s control and had vowed to kill Gojo.

However, before Megumi could follow through with his attack, Kenjaku intervened, reminding him of the terms of their binding vow, the specifics of which remained unknown to readers. It appeared that the agreement involved Sukuna assisting Kenjaku in attaining even greater power before killing Gojo. In compliance with this pact, the King of Curses stood down, and Gojo proposed that the three of them resume their battle on Christmas Eve.

Amused by what he perceived as Gojo’s arrogance, Kenjaku asked him, “You don’t expect to lose?” This prompted Gojo to recall a conversation he had with his young student, Itadori Yuuji, back in Chapter 3. When Yuuji had asked if Sukuna was stronger than him, Gojo had replied, “Hm… Good question. If Sukuna were to completely regain his power, it might be a little tough.”

Yuuji, still grappling with the intricacies of the jujutsu world, had further inquired, “Would you lose?” Gojo had confidently and casually responded, “Nah, I’d win.” In the original Japanese release of the chapter, as evident in raw scans provided by fan translator @soukatsu_, Gojo had responded to Kenjaku’s question with the same confident answer he had given Yuuji. However, Viz Media’s version presented a more blunt and simple response of “No.”

Upon discovering this alteration, disappointed fans took to social media to express their frustration with Viz Media’s mishandling of Gojo’s comeback. @king_jin_woo questioned, “‘NO’ That’s it? Seriously? He’s back after 1000 days, and this is how they make it sound? Viz, please stop ruining important moments with lazy and dull translations.” @babumoshayyy noted, “At least they could have stuck with the original dialogue,” referring to the reference to Gojo and Yuuji’s previous conversation. “@FanDeLuna6 declared, “At least, both TCB Scans and the official French arm of Shueisha’s Manga Plus service did a better job than Viz.”

In an unexpected turn of events, it appears that Viz Media’s localization team heeded the fans’ feedback. A few days later, Gojo’s dialogue was revised to align more closely with mangaka Gege Akutami’s original intention. While this change was applied to the digital release of the chapter, it remains to be seen which version Viz Media will utilize when compiling it in tankobon form.
