GT proven canon to Super by fallen DB hero

Since Dragon Ball Super debuted, many fans have been questioning whether or not Dragon Ball GT, the original sequel to Dragon Ball, is still considered canon. While there are some plot inconsistencies if GT is considered the future that Super is leading into, one character in Super proves that GT is still very much a part of the continuity.

In the Cell Saga of Dragon Ball Z, the Z-Fighters battled against their greatest foe, Cell. Though they eventually defeated him, their victory came at a great cost. Not only did Goku sacrifice himself, but King Kai also lost his life. In order to prevent Cell from detonating and destroying the entire world, Goku grabbed the villain and used instant transmission to travel to King Kai’s world, effectively sacrificing both himself and King Kai.

Fast forward to Dragon Ball Super and King Kai is still dead. He consistently begs Goku and his friends to use the Dragon Balls to bring him back to life, but they either forget or refuse to do so. While this is one of the more humorous ongoing gags in the anime, it serves a purpose when it comes to the continuity of the series.

In Dragon Ball GT, which takes place roughly fifteen years after the main events of Dragon Ball Z, King Kai is still dead. This means that no one has wished for him to return to life for nearly two decades, despite the fact that he died because Goku essentially sacrificed him to save the planet. The fact that Dragon Ball Super is continuing this trend of not bringing King Kai back to life indicates that the series is staying true to the established canon of Dragon Ball GT.

While some fans argue that Super effectively retconned GT, thereby eliminating GT from the established canon of the main series, one official Dragon Ball timeline seems to indicate that they are, in fact, two series that exist within one continuity. The death of King Kai (or more accurately, the lack of a resurrection-wish for King Kai) only strengthens the argument that Dragon Ball GT is canon to Dragon Ball Super. This gives the creators plenty of room to craft new and interesting stories with these beloved characters before those stories eventually merge into the continuity of Dragon Ball GT.
