Howard Shore, composer of ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ reveals his favorite track

The monumental success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is often attributed to the collaborative brilliance of its cast and crew. In a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Shore was asked to name his favorite tracks from The Lord of the Rings. Amidst the vast repertoire of his compositions, Shore amusingly struggled to recall the exact name, mentioning ‘The Destruction of Mordor.’ Reddit users quickly pointed out that he was likely referring to ‘The End of All Things,’ a poignant piece that swells during the climactic moment when Frodo casts the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, resulting in the destruction of Mordor.

While Shore’s momentary mix-up provided a lighthearted anecdote, it underscored the immense challenge of recalling specific titles from his vast and illustrious career, spanning nearly 90 credits over more than four decades. Nevertheless, for ardent fans of The Lord of the Rings, Shore’s orchestral arrangements, including the mentioned composition, continue to hold a special place in their hearts.
