Disney relinquished its animation dominance, and Universal seized the opportunity. With the release of ‘Migration’ on Friday, Universal aims to fortify its position. The film, a whimsical story about a New England duck family venturing from their pond to Jamaica but ending up in New York City, is expected to secure a $25 million domestic debut. Universal’s conservative estimate predicts $10 million to $15 million in opening ticket sales.
Although this falls short of Illumination/Universal’s blockbusters like ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ and the latest ‘Minions’ film, it aligns with the performance of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,’ jointly produced by Universal and DreamWorks Animation. The film, running for several months, accumulated nearly $500 million globally.
The underperformance of Disney’s recent animated film ‘Wish,’ generating $55.2 million in the U.S. and Canada, contrasts starkly with ‘Trolls Band Together,’ which secured nearly $180 million worldwide. Disney’s struggles stem from the Covid-induced shift, emphasizing streaming over theaters and a perception of content growing too complex for children.
In contrast, Universal’s animation arms, Illumination and DreamWorks, thrived. ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ each exceeded $1 billion, while ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ reached $485 million. Universal’s success is attributed to a focus on entertainment without overcomplicating narratives.
As audiences return post-pandemic, Universal’s animation excels, tapping into nostalgia and leveraging tried-and-true franchises. Illumination’s consistent franchise content, including ‘Minions’ and ‘Trolls,’ builds brand recognition, contributing to the success of new releases like ‘Migration.’ This strategy mirrors Pixar’s historical success.
While Disney and Pixar plan ‘Inside Out 2’ in June 2023, Universal and Illumination’s ‘Despicable Me 4’ in July position them as formidable contenders in the evolving animation landscape.
