Director Benjamin Renner and writer Mike White offer a sneak peek into their forthcoming animated film, featuring a star-studded cast led by Elizabeth Banks and Kumail Nanjiani.
Renner, the acclaimed French director known for his Oscar-nominated work on Ernest et Célestine, brought a unique rule to the creation of Migration: no fart jokes. Avoiding such easy laughs, he aimed to craft gags that catered to the enjoyment of the entire family. Renner, a proponent of hand-drawn animation, initially felt surprised when Illumination’s Chris Meledandri sought him for Migration, given the studio’s affinity for 3D animation seen in hits like Minions and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, the duo shared a vision for this action-packed comedy.
The film revolves around an endearing family of unconventional ducks, voiced by Banks, Tresi Gazal, and Caspar Jennings, striving to persuade their overprotective father (Nanjiani) to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. The star-studded cast includes Danny DeVito, Awkwafina, Carol Kane, Keegan-Michael Key, and more. Renner likens the movie to a duck-themed version of Little Miss Sunshine, emphasizing the camaraderie of a family working together.
Writer Mike White, renowned for The White Lotus, characterizes the film’s approach as a “comedic fantasy landscape” exploring universal themes such as the desire for curiosity, adventure, and growth, juxtaposed with anxiety and fear about the world. Beyond being a children’s movie, White believes Migration possesses an added layer of poetry, wistfulness, and parental themes.
The film’s zaniness is elevated by the vocal talents of its cast. Renner praises Banks for infusing her character with ideas and peppiness, while White commends Nanjiani’s delivery, drawing a comparison to a “Jack Lemmon quality” with everyday charm and comic neurotic energy.
Debuting in theaters on December 22, Migration was originally scheduled for a summer release. White sees the timing as serendipitous, tying into the film’s core theme of the importance of family and the idea that home is wherever your loved ones are—an especially resonant message during the holiday season.
