Universal is outperforming Disney in the animated box office

As of the current box office results for “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Universal Pictures is outperforming Disney in the animated film category. According to box office analyst Gitesh Pandya, the film has become the third animated release of the pandemic era to surpass $150 million domestically. The other two films achieving this milestone were “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($369.5 million) and “Sing 2” ($162.8 million), both of which were also released by Universal Pictures, the owner of DreamWorks.

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” has garnered acclaim for its animation and compelling storytelling, accumulating a global box office total of $369.1 million. While it has performed well, “The Rise of Gru” remains the highest-grossing animated release of the pandemic, with a record-setting opening weekend and a worldwide gross exceeding $939 million. Originally slated for a July 3, 2020 release, “The Rise of Gru” faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the shutdown of Illumination Animation’s French studios.

In contrast, Disney’s animated releases during the pandemic have not achieved the same domestic success. None of Disney or Pixar’s animated films since the onset of COVID-19 have surpassed $150 million domestically. Notable releases include “Onward” (global earnings of $142 million), “Soul” (released exclusively on Disney+ with $121 million worldwide), “Raya and the Last Dragon” ($130.4 million), “Luca” ($49.8 million), and “Lightyear” ($118 million domestically and $226.4 million worldwide).

The strategy of releasing films simultaneously in theaters and on streaming platforms, or with limited theatrical runs, has been a common approach for Disney during the pandemic. “Encanto” achieved substantial success with $256.8 million worldwide and $96 million domestically, becoming the most-streamed film of 2022 after a 30-day theatrical run. “Turning Red,” with a box office revenue of $20.1 million, marked Pixar’s return to theaters, but Pixar employees expressed disappointment when the film premiered exclusively on Disney+ instead of having a full theatrical release.

Chairman of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution Kareem Daniel cited “delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films,” as a factor in the decision to release certain films on streaming platforms. Despite the challenges faced by Disney, Universal’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” continues to perform well in theaters.
