Mahershala Ali shares positive news about the production of the Blade MCU film

Mahershala Ali, who is poised to take on the iconic role of the vampire hunter in Marvel Studios’ Blade, recently provided an encouraging update on the film’s production status. In a conversation with EW, Ali shared insights into the ongoing efforts to bring the character to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He expressed optimism, stating, “We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you.” Ali went on to mention positive developments in the project and his enthusiasm for its direction, adding, “I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon.”

Blade’s journey to the big screen has not been without its share of challenges. Initially announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the reboot encountered hurdles during pre-production, including the departure of the original director, Bassam Tariq, and reported script dissatisfaction that almost led to Ali’s departure from the project. Despite these setbacks, Ali now expresses sincere encouragement regarding the current status of the film, highlighting the individuals involved in shaping its narrative and direction.

Notably, Yann Demange, known for his work on Lovecraft Country, has assumed the directorial role for Blade, with Michael Green, the writer behind Logan, contributing to the script. Ali expressed confidence in the team, noting, “So that’s the extent of what I can tell you.” He acknowledged the unique qualities of Blade’s character, describing his “dignity and integrity” alongside a concealed “ferocity” that the film aims to unleash on the screen.

The film’s journey also faced delays due to concurrent strikes by the Writers’ Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA. Blade is now scheduled to hit theaters on November 7, 2025. While Ali has yet to make his debut as Blade in an MCU film, he did provide a brief voice cameo in the post-credits scene of the 2021 release, Eternals.
