Joel Kinnaman reflects on Rick Flag’s poignant death in The Suicide Squad and speculates on his potential return in James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe. Having portrayed Rick Flag in both Suicide Squad movies in the DCEU, Kinnaman’s character meets his end at the hands of John Cena’s Peacemaker in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. While Flag’s demise seemingly precludes his return in the new DCU, as Cena’s Peacemaker continues his story in a presumed intact state for season 2 of his series, Kinnaman entertains the idea of returning in a different role.
During an interview on The Post-Credit Podcast, Kinnaman expresses admiration for Flag’s emotionally charged death scene, including the now-iconic “Peacemaker… what a joke” line. Despite Flag’s apparent permanence in death within the DCU, Kinnaman is open to the possibility of returning as a villain in future DC projects. He states, “Yeah [I was like ‘What the f-ck, James?’]. I love that scene, though, it was such a good way to go. But, for sure, maybe I’ll come back and play some nasty villain in a couple of years.”
As Kinnaman’s tenure as Rick Flag concludes, his versatile acting skills position him as a suitable choice for various DCU villain roles in Gunn’s evolving cinematic universe. With numerous major villainous roles available, Kinnaman’s potential casting opens the door for compelling options. Gunn previously considered featuring Deathstroke in The Suicide Squad, making the violent character a fitting choice for Kinnaman in the DCU. Given Joe Manganiello’s likely departure from the role of Slade Wilson, Kinnaman could seamlessly step into the role. Additionally, Kinnaman could excel as Two-Face in the Batman reboot film, The Brave and the Bold, or in a future sequel/Bat-Family spin-off, leveraging his dramatic prowess and comedic timing.
Furthermore, Kinnaman’s skill set positions him as a captivating choice for other DC villains, such as the Yellow Lantern Sinestro, allowing him to deliver a nuanced performance. The extent to which The Suicide Squad will remain canon in the DCU remains uncertain, potentially paving the way for Kinnaman’s return as Rick Flag through flashbacks to his father, Rick Flag Sr., portrayed by Frank Grillo in Creature Commandos.
