Why Marvel Delays Official Doctor Strange 2 Announcement

When Marvel embarks on a successful franchise, the tradition is to swiftly announce a sequel; however, one notable exception is Doctor Strange. Directed by Scott Derrickson and featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous character, the film achieved solid success both critically and commercially upon its release in November 2015. With a domestic gross of $232 million, it outperformed the first films of other franchises like Thor, Captain America, and Ant-Man. Globally, it amassed $677 million, surpassing the global earnings of the initial two Iron Man movies. Given these accomplishments, the delay in announcing a sequel has sparked curiosity.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige sheds light on this matter, citing a couple of reasons for the absence of news regarding Doctor Strange 2. One significant factor is Doctor Strange’s substantial presence in Avengers: Infinity War and the forthcoming Avengers 4. Feige notes that the supersized Avengers team-up provides audiences with a generous dose of Doctor Strange between his standalone films.

However, the primary reason for Marvel’s silence on a Doctor Strange sequel lies in the studio’s strategic decision to keep a lid on its post-Avengers 4 plans. Feige points out that Marvel previously unveiled its entire slate from Captain America: Civil War to Avengers 4 four years ago. The focus now is on delivering on those promises with films like Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and the upcoming Avengers 4. Feige expresses the studio’s intention to fulfill these commitments before making new announcements, stating, ‘I don’t want to talk about what I’m having for dinner when I’m about to have lunch.’

Despite the anticipation surrounding San Diego Comic-Con, Feige hints that Marvel Studios will remain tight-lipped about Doctor Strange 2. Typically, Marvel hosts a news-making Hall H panel at Comic-Con, but this year they plan to go dark, allowing the dust to settle after the release of Infinity War.

The potential impact of Avengers 4 on standalone sequels raises questions about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will evolve. While trilogies for Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America seem to have reached their conclusion, newer franchises like Doctor Strange are just getting started. If Avengers 4 indeed alters the MCU in a profound way, affecting characters and reality, it could impact the plans laid out for these standalone franchises.

Feige acknowledges this potential impact but draws a parallel to a past decision that shook up the MCU: Tony Stark’s revelation of his superhero identity at the end of the first Iron Man film. Although this move initially rattled director Jon Favreau, who was already contemplating sequels, it ultimately paved the way for fresh narratives. Feige expresses a willingness to embrace change, stating, ‘Breaking eggs and then figuring out how to make an omelette from it is inherent in the entire history of our studio and the nature of the MCU.’ As Marvel Studios prepares to navigate the aftermath of Avengers 4, the approach remains one of adaptation and evolution, ensuring the MCU remains dynamic and innovative.
