Tim Burton, the renowned director who helmed the first half of Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ series, has recently offered some intriguing insights into what fans can expect from Season 2. This revelation comes on the heels of the series’ successful debut in 2022, firmly establishing ‘Wednesday’ as a show with a promising future. The series quickly captured the hearts of viewers, with many applauding Jenna Ortega’s fresh take on the iconic character, leading to growing anticipation for what lies ahead.
Jenna Ortega herself provided a glimpse into the exciting developments of ‘Wednesday’ Season 2. In an interview with Glamour in April 2023, she shared that preparations for the upcoming season were already underway. Teasing the audience with promises of “new storylines” and suggesting that the forthcoming episodes would be “bigger and better” than the first season, Ortega’s enthusiasm for the project was palpable. She expressed her commitment to the show by stating, “No vacations or anything like that. We are starting to prep Season 2 of ‘Wednesday,’ which…has been exciting. Just developing new storylines and seeing where characters are going. Starting those conversations has been really, really fun. I think it’s going to be bigger and better, which is cool.”
However, the progress of ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 has faced certain challenges, primarily due to the ongoing strikes in the entertainment industry. Tim Burton, speaking with BFI, shed light on his involvement in the upcoming season. While he indicated his desire to be part of Season 2, he also acknowledged that the strikes have temporarily put the production on hold. Burton stated, “I mentally put stuff on hold until all the strikes are over. I can edit and do things I can do, but until the veil is lifted, then things get back into it. But yeah, I’ll be involved in some [way]. I’m not quite sure because everything has stopped at the moment.”
Burton’s appreciation for Jenna Ortega’s contribution to the show was evident as he emphasized her pivotal role in making ‘Wednesday’ a success. He remarked, “When I did ‘Wednesday,’ the reason I loved it is I just related to the character so much. But to me, it could not have been done without her. You can write it good, you can do whatever you want to do, but that kind of a character would need such clarity and purity and strength. A person has to have that. So for me, she basically made the show that way.”
Burton also highlighted Ortega’s unique qualities, including her attentiveness to every detail on set and her previous experience in horror films. These factors, along with her acting prowess, secured a special place in Burton’s heart. He shared, “She’s one of the most aware, not only as an actress, but everything, around the camera, the set. She’s a very special talent. And she’s done a lot of horror movies, which I love too. That gave her a special place in my heart. ‘Oh, you’re doing another horror. Good.'”
As things stand, production on ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 has not commenced, and an official release date for the new season remains elusive due to the ongoing strikes in the entertainment industry. Fans of the show may need to exercise patience as they eagerly await the day when production resumes and the next installment of ‘Wednesday’ can move forward.
