Haikyuu!! is a beloved sports anime that has captured the hearts of fans around the world with its high-energy volleyball action and relatable characters. The anime is based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. The manga was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2012 and ended in 2020 with a total of 45 tankobon volumes.
The anime adaptation of Haikyuu!! has been widely successful and has spawned four seasons so far. However, fans have been eagerly waiting for news about a potential Season 5 since the last season ended in December 2020. While there had been rumors and speculations, the official Haikyuu!! Twitter account finally revealed the news that the anime will conclude with two films.
The announcement brought mixed emotions from fans; on one hand, they were elated knowing an animated film adaptation of the hit sports series is on the way. Others, however, are upset that the rest of the Haikyuu!! manga — more than 100 chapters — will somehow be adapted into just two movies. Many fans are wondering if it’s possible to successfully adapt so much material into just two films.
The decision to conclude the anime with films rather than a new season may be due to budget restrictions. The production of Season 4 did suffer some setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have affected the studio’s ability to continue the series as a regular anime season. Other popular anime series such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer have seen incredible success with their respective anime movies, and the Haikyuu!! anime may be following the same trend.
While the news of the Haikyuu!! films is exciting, many fans are concerned about how the remaining manga arcs will be adapted. The manga has a rich story and character development that spans over several arcs, and compressing all of that into just two films will be a challenging task. Assuming the two movies will cover the rest of the series — including the time-skip arc — it’s fair to say the material will be heavily compressed or even cut in order to include everything.
The first part of the movie duo may focus on the Battle at the Garbage Dump and do a short segue into the Kamomedai match, with the second part focused on the entirety of that match before doing a brief glimpse of Hinata and Kageyama now playing pro. Depending on run-time, Hinata’s training in Brazil might also be included in Part 2 as this was a huge part of his development as an athlete. However, the focus on Karasuno would mean other characters who have become so beloved in the fandom might not see the big screen — and the Haikyuu!! manga has always made it a point to focus on teams other than Karasuno.
Despite the concerns, fans are still eagerly anticipating the release of the Haikyuu!! films. The animation quality is expected to be top-notch since the films will have a higher budget compared to a regular anime season. There is no release date yet for the films, besides the kick-off event in August 2023, which means the animation team will have ample time to work their magic.
In conclusion, while the news of the Haikyuu!! anime concluding with two films has brought mixed emotions from fans, it is still an exciting development for the series. The films will undoubtedly have stunning animation and will hopefully do justice to the rich story and character development of the manga. Fans will just have to wait and see how the films will adapt the remaining manga arcs and hope that their favorite characters will still get the screen time and moments they deserve. But one thing is for sure, the impact that Haikyuu!! has had on its fans and the sports anime genre as a whole will not be forgotten.
