Jackson’s original Hobbit plan: better but risky for Lord of the Rings

Peter Jackson’s original plan for “The Hobbit” in the 1990s differed significantly from what ultimately unfolded on screen. While he initially envisioned a single film adaptation, this approach could have altered the trajectory of “The Lord of the Rings” saga.

Jackson’s journey into Tolkien’s world began with his groundbreaking adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings,” which solidified his reputation as a visionary director. However, when it came to “The Hobbit,” the decision to expand Bilbo’s story into a trilogy fell short of the same acclaim.

Despite the financial success of “The Hobbit” trilogy, the critical response was mixed, with criticisms centering on the films’ bloated narratives and departure from the source material’s simplicity. Jackson’s original plan for a single “Hobbit” film might have resulted in a more faithful and cohesive adaptation.

Interestingly, Jackson initially pitched his idea for “The Lord of the Rings” to Miramax Films, proposing to begin with “The Hobbit” as a standalone movie before proceeding with two films covering the rest of Tolkien’s novels. However, disagreements over the number of films led Jackson to pursue the project with New Line Cinema instead, ultimately resulting in the iconic trilogy.

While the success of “The Hobbit” trilogy may have paved the way for its own existence, there’s speculation that a standalone “Hobbit” film could have limited the appeal of subsequent “Lord of the Rings” adaptations. The complexities surrounding the rights to “The Hobbit” also posed challenges, further influencing the eventual decision to expand the story into a trilogy.

In retrospect, while Jackson’s original vision for “The Hobbit” may have diverged from the trilogy format, the success of his “Lord of the Rings” films ultimately shaped the cinematic landscape of Middle-earth, ensuring a lasting legacy for both director and franchise.
