Disney Offloads Significant Movie Business Stake to Sony

Disney and Sony have struck a significant deal, as reported by Variety. Under this agreement, Disney will outsource the distribution of its home entertainment media to Sony Pictures Entertainment. This entails Sony handling the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of DVDs, Blu-rays, and other physical media for Disney-owned releases. The arrangement stipulates that Sony will exclusively sell all new Disney releases and catalog titles on physical media through various retailers in the United States and Canada. However, Disney will retain control over the digital versions of its media.

There are speculations that this transition could result in layoffs at Disney, prompting the company to conduct an internal assessment across all business functions supporting physical entertainment amid the shift to Sony. Disney has indicated that the deal with Sony aims to streamline the process of meeting consumer demand for physical copies of movies and TV shows more efficiently. This move comes in response to previous reports suggesting Disney’s intention to reduce its focus on selling physical media, which drew criticism on social media platforms.

Physical media sales have witnessed a decline in recent years, with a 28% drop in the United States during the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This trend is reflected in the strategic shifts of other major companies. For instance, Best Buy ceased the sales of Blu-rays and DVDs both in-store and online in early 2024, while Netflix discontinued its DVD-by-mail business in 2023 due to dwindling interest.

Despite the decline, there remains a dedicated market for physical media, with some filmmakers advocating for its support. Christopher Nolan, for example, highlighted the importance of the Blu-ray format for preserving the cinematic experience and ensuring ownership of beloved films.
