Following his transition from Marvel to DC, James Gunn, the acclaimed director behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has assumed a pivotal role as the creative chief of the new DC Universe (DCU). Amid his leadership in crafting the overarching narrative for the DCU, fans have been speculating about the possibility of Gunn returning to write another Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie.
In response to inquiries, Gunn recently addressed the question of whether he could contribute to an MCU project while helming DC’s creative endeavors. He categorically stated that he could not, citing both physical and legal constraints. The legal aspect is straightforward, as serving as a co-CEO at DC Studios and simultaneously collaborating with Marvel Studios would present insurmountable conflicts of interest.
However, it is the physical aspect of his response that has piqued the curiosity of fans. Gunn elaborated on this, explaining that his schedule is currently at full capacity, leaving him unable to take on additional projects. With filming for the DCU’s Superman: Legacy set to commence in March, in which Gunn is both writer and director, and his active involvement in other announced projects, such as the adult animated series Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn’s professional plate is undeniably brimming.
Superman: Legacy, scheduled for release in 2025, marks Gunn’s directorial debut within the DCU. The cast includes David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Gunn’s influence extends beyond directing, as he is actively engaged in the scripting and casting of Creature Commandos, an animated series slated for late 2024 release. Notably, the series features familiar faces from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), such as Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, and Viola Davis.
Gunn’s commitment to the DCU is further evident in his involvement with Peacemaker Season 2. While the inaugural season was situated in the DCEU and even included a Justice League cameo, the second season will seamlessly transition into the new DCU. Gunn consistently updates fans on his progress, recently revealing that he is already penning the season finale.
Given James Gunn’s substantial contributions to the DCU, encompassing directing, writing, and overseeing multiple projects, it becomes apparent that his present commitments leave no room for him to entertain the prospect of returning to the MCU, even if the opportunity were available.
