Aquaman 2 marks the unfortunate conclusion of the DC Extended Universe

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” positioned as the conclusion of the DC Extended Universe and the follow-up to the 2018 hit “Aquaman,” featuring Jason Momoa, has finally been released to a rather underwhelming reception. The film, focusing on Arthur Curry’s role as the king of Atlantis and his struggles on land, fails to captivate audiences with its uninspired storyline, lackluster characters, and subpar editing.

As the supposed final chapter of the DCEU spanning from 2013 to 2023, one would expect loose ends to be tied up and characters to find satisfying resolutions. However, “Aquaman 2” merely echoes the mistakes of the troubled DCEU era, presenting stale characters, nonsensical writing, and mediocre editing and choreography.

While the characters lack depth, the actors manage to salvage some enjoyment with their performances. Patrick Wilson, portraying a charismatic and gullible character, stands out, adding humor to an otherwise dull narrative. The brotherly dynamic between Momoa and Wilson provides a glimmer of light in the movie’s otherwise dreary 124-minute runtime.

Despite director James Wan’s involvement, Warner Bros.’ interference is evident in the film’s generic and manufactured feel, diverging from Wan’s previous works. Certain well-executed moments, such as the nighttime kidnapping scene and the monster attack on Black Manta’s crew, showcase Wan’s prowess, but overall, the film suffers from executive meddling.

The editing, usually seamless in superhero movies, falters in “Aquaman 2,” leaving scenes disjointed and robbing them of crucial moments. The movie, far from delivering a thrilling experience, often confuses and disengages the audience.

In the era of superhero fatigue, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” fails to offer anything new or exciting. Instead, it serves as a lackluster sequel and a disappointing conclusion to one of the most troubled franchises of the past decade, perpetuating the trend of DCEU films falling short of expectations.
