Netflix in the United States and several other regions is set to receive a lineup of high-profile DreamWorks and Illumination movies in the upcoming year and beyond. Since 2022, Netflix has shared the first-window rights to Universal’s animation lineup with its streaming service, Peacock, in the United States. The deal involves movies spending four months in theaters, followed by four months on Peacock, then a ten-month stint on Netflix before returning to Peacock for another four months.
Among the anticipated releases is the DreamWorks Animation movie “Orion and the Dark,” exclusively premiering on Netflix globally on February 2nd, 2024. The film, skipping theaters, tells the tale of a young man named Orion overcoming his fears after befriending a monster called Dark.
Another notable release is “Migration,” which hit theaters on December 22nd, 2023, and is estimated to arrive on Netflix around August 2024. This new IP follows a Mallard family on a road trip from New England to New York City to tropical Jamaica, receiving acclaim for its story and art direction.
“Illumination’s crown jewel,” “Despicable Me 4,” is scheduled for theatrical release on July 3rd, 2024, with an estimated Netflix release around March 2025. The movie features the iconic Minions and includes the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and others.
Additional Illumination projects in development include “Big Tree,” “Sing 3,” “The Secret Life of Pets 3,” and a sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” likely not surfacing until at least 2025.
For DreamWorks Animation, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” is expected to hit Netflix in early 2024, following its theatrical release in June 2023. The film received positive reviews and revolves around a high school student discovering her lineage as the warrior Kraken queen.
