Woman’s remains found in pond near Walt Disney World, 12 years after disappearance

The breakthrough came about through the efforts of divers associated with Sunshine State Sonar, an organization that aids law enforcement in cases involving missing persons, vehicles, or vessels submerged in bodies of water. Last week, the divers were conducting a search in the vicinity of the Disney World Interstate 4 exit when they made the startling discovery of the submerged vehicle, believed to be linked to Lemire.

The Lemire family members, grappling with the long-standing uncertainty surrounding Sandra’s disappearance, expressed their belief that the uncovered remains are those of their missing relative, according to statements made to The Associated Press. The tragic find brings a measure of closure but also reopens the investigation into the circumstances of Lemire’s disappearance over a decade ago.

The search effort was intensified following a crucial tip provided by a detective from the Orlando Police Department, focusing on the cellphone tower that registered the last call from Lemire’s phone. Sunshine State Sonar, via a post on their Facebook page, revealed that the information led them to concentrate their search efforts on the retention pond where the submerged minivan was ultimately located.

In their statement, Sunshine State Sonar described the discovery, stating, “We located what appeared to be a minivan submerged in 14 feet of water. Our team quickly suited up and dove on the vehicle to make the license plate confirmation.” Despite this significant breakthrough, the formal identification of the remains rests with the Orlando medical examiner, who will conduct the necessary procedures to confirm the identity of the recovered individual.
