Theaters are worried that the Christmas box office success is reliant on Aquaman 2’s performance

As the exclusive blockbuster release for December, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is under scrutiny, with theater owners expressing concerns about its pivotal role in the Christmas box office. This apprehension is rooted in the absence of a standout film, akin to past successes like Avatar or Spider-Man: No Way Home, in the current release schedule. The industry’s landscape in 2023 has been marked by a series of big-budget misfires, further amplifying the uncertainties surrounding Aquaman 2’s potential success.

Phoenix Theaters, a midwestern chain, voices these concerns, emphasizing that the lack of a clear standout film poses challenges for theater schedules. The dilemma revolves around stocking numerous showtimes for a single movie — a practice necessitated by the demand for a major film release during the holiday season. However, such an approach carries risks, especially if the selected film fails to resonate with audiences.

Amid criticisms suggesting that superhero movies demand too much “homework” from viewers, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom aims to counter this perception. Director James Wan assures that the film is designed to be a standalone experience, allowing even those unfamiliar with previous entries to enjoy the movie. The emphasis remains on Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman, promising an entertaining and accessible cinematic journey.

Wan, in an earlier discussion, emphasized the film’s standalone nature, stating that both the first Aquaman and its sequel exist in their own worlds. Despite the expansive storytelling, the movies are crafted to be comprehensible and enjoyable on their own merits. The Lost Kingdom is poised to take the narrative to the next level, expanding the Aquaman universe and incorporating action visuals that fans have come to love.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, scheduled for theatrical release on December 25th, continues the story as an ancient power is unleashed, compelling Aquaman to form an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally.
