As the highly anticipated release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” approaches next month, early box office projections suggest a more modest performance compared to its predecessor. According to the latest estimates from Box Office Pro, the DC Studios film is tracking to achieve a debut ranging between $32-42 million during its opening weekend, with an overall domestic total projection falling within the range of $105-168 million.
This projection marks a substantial decline from the original “Aquaman,” which made a splash in 2018 with a robust opening of $67.9 million in the United States and Canada. The first installment went on to become a major success, accumulating a domestic box office total of $335.1 million and surpassing $1.1 billion in total worldwide box office earnings.
The projected performance of “The Lost Kingdom” not only falls below the impressive numbers of its predecessor but also lags behind the opening weekend figures of “The Flash,” which debuted with a $55 million weekend earlier this year.
Returning for the sequel are key cast members, with Jason Momoa reprising his role as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, joined by Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Amber Heard, and Randall Park. The film also introduces new cast members, including Pilou Asbæk, Indya Moore, Vincent Regan, and Jani Zhao.
Directed once again by James Wan, the visionary filmmaker behind the success of the first film, and with a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is produced by Wan and his frequent collaborator Peter Safran.
The movie’s performance at the box office will be closely watched, especially considering the notable success of the original “Aquaman” and the current landscape of superhero films. As the DC cinematic universe continues to evolve, the expectations for the sequel’s financial success and audience reception remain a topic of anticipation and discussion among fans and industry observers alike.
