Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, poised for release next month, is already generating anticipation, though early box office predictions hint at a potentially lukewarm reception in theaters.
Projections from Box Office Pro indicate that the upcoming DC Studios production is on track to secure an opening weekend box office revenue ranging from $32-42 million. Looking at the overall domestic performance, the Aquaman sequel is expected to yield a total return between $105-168 million.
This forecast signifies a notable decrease compared to its predecessor, as the original Aquaman made a splash with a $67.9 million opening in the United States and Canada back in 2018. The first installment went on to amass an impressive $335.1 million at the domestic box office, eventually crossing the $1.1 billion mark in global earnings.
The anticipated return for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom not only falls short of the original film’s achievements but also trails behind The Flash, which debuted earlier this year with a $55 million opening weekend.
Returning to helm the sequel is director James Wan, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick penning the screenplay. Jason Momoa reprises his role as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, leading a cast that includes returning actors Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Amber Heard, and Randall Park.
Adding fresh faces to the ensemble, Aquaman 2 introduces Game of Thrones alum Pilou Asbæk, Indya Moore (known for roles in Pose and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions), Vincent Regan (from 300 and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), and Chinese-Portuguese actress Jani Zhao (recognized for her work in Jogo Duplo and The Sugar Captains).
The film is produced by James Wan alongside his frequent collaborator Peter Safran, promising a blend of continuity and novelty. As audiences eagerly await the aquatic adventure, the introduction of new characters and the return of fan-favorites add layers of intrigue to the upcoming cinematic chapter in the DC Universe.
