“Loki” rewrites the Avengers’ origin over a decade after the Battle of New York

In the second season of “Loki,” the Disney+ series offers a unique twist on the Avengers’ origin story, which was initially sparked by the God of Mischief’s attack.

In the latest season of “Loki,” a significant reimagining of the Avengers’ origin story unfolds, particularly during the Battle of New York, as depicted in the 2012 film “The Avengers.” Over a decade since his introduction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki continues to play a pivotal role in the franchise, venturing through various realities. He stands out as one of the most dynamic characters in the Multiverse Saga, having made crucial contributions to the previous Infinity Saga. Interestingly, while the Avengers, the very heroes who were formed in response to Loki’s threat, remain unaware of the impending danger, Loki finds himself in the midst of it, determined to prevent the looming threat posed by Kang the Conqueror.

What adds a layer of irony to this scenario is that the MCU’s initial collective antagonist is now on the path to becoming one of its greatest heroes. Although this version of Loki is distinct from the character in the Sacred Timeline who met his demise at the hands of Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” their shared history renders this variant a compelling substitute. Just a little over a decade after the God of Mischief launched a brutal attack on New York, he now finds himself in a role reversal in “Loki” season 2, episode 5, titled “Science/Fiction.”

For much of his existence, Loki has been a solitary figure. While he briefly teamed up with Thor and other Asgardian allies, as seen in Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Ragnarok,” these alliances were transitory. However, in “Loki” season 2, he assembles his own team, taking the lead in their efforts to reinstate the Time Variance Authority (TVA). This mission emerges following the game-changing conclusion of “Loki” season 2, episode 4. Embarking on journeys across various times and dimensions, Loki recruits OB, Casey, B-15, Sylvie, and Mobius to join the cause.

The “Loki” series delves deeply into the concept of the multiverse, but it hadn’t previously explored the realities of these characters before their involvement with the TVA. In episode 5, viewers gain insight into their lives prior to being entangled with the TVA, and many of them were leading bleak and desolate existences. OB was an unsuccessful science-fiction author, Casey was a detainee, Mobius was grappling with fatherhood challenges, and Sylvie was stuck in mediocrity. Only B-15 was experiencing success, and had she remained in her original timeline, she would likely have been affected by Loki’s New York attack.

Marvel Studios employs a storytelling technique reminiscent of “The Avengers” and applies it to “Loki” as the God of Mischief assembles his own team. In the 2012 blockbuster film, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes united to combat their common adversary, Loki. Now, Thor’s adopted brother has had to bring together his own squad to safeguard the multiverse in the “Loki” series. This development creates a full-circle moment for the beloved character. Some argue that Loki’s team has the potential to surpass the original Earth’s Mightiest Heroes due to the genuine connections he shares with each member.
