Despicable Me Spinoff Hits $1 Billion in Success on Netflix After 8 Years

After grossing over $1 billion at the global box office, the Despicable Me spinoff, Minions, is experiencing a resurgence on Netflix, making its way into the platform’s top 10 list eight years after its initial release. The 2015 prequel offered an origin story for Gru’s beloved yellow and energetic band of sidekicks, known as the Minions. Renowned for their gibberish language, the Minions were a massive box office hit, ultimately leading to the 2022 sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru.

During the week spanning from October 23 to October 29, Minions reemerged on Netflix’s Global Top 10, accumulating 3 million views and securing the eighth spot. In the same period, the Netflix Global Top 10 was led by ‘Old Dads’ at number one and ‘Pain Hustlers’ at number two, with 16.3 million and 14.1 million views, respectively.

Minions Stands as the Pinnacle of the Despicable Me Franchise, with the original Despicable Me film, released in 2010, earning a commendable $543 million worldwide. However, Minions exceeded all expectations when it hit theaters five years later, capitalizing on the momentum created by the 2013 release of Despicable Me 2. The Minions movie garnered a staggering $1.1 billion in global box office earnings, solidifying its status as the most successful installment within the Despicable Me franchise.

The Minions’ popularity continued to grow, reaching new heights with the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru.
