“‘By the beard of Abraham Lincoln!’
Jessie immediately stood out in the Toy Story universe upon meeting Woody in the second film. Introduced as part of a memorabilia collection for the ’50s TV show Woody’s Roundup, alongside Bullseye and Stinky Pete, Jessie’s vibrant personality conceals a somber history of abandonment by her former owner.
As a pivotal character in Toy Story, next to Woody and Buzz, Jessie made appearances across various media, such as the Halloween Special Toy Story of Terror! where she took the lead, and the Disney Infinity video game.
Who provides the voice for Jessie in Toy Story movies? Since joining Andy’s toy collection in Toy Story 2, Jessie’s voice has been lent by Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning actress Joan Cusack. This role earned her an Annie Award, a prestigious honor in animation, for Best Female Voice Acting in a Feature Production.
Cusack continued her portrayal in Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, as well as two short films from the 2011 series Toy Story Toons: the aforementioned Toy Story of Terror! and Toy Story That Time Forgot. The actress is notably recognized for her role as Sheila Jackson in the Showtime dramedy Shameless.
Other Voices Behind Jessie: Interestingly, it’s not Joan Cusack providing the singing voice during the poignant flashback sequence in Toy Story 2, when Jessie recounts her past with her former owner Emily. The vocals in the Grammy-winning song actually belong to Sarah McLachlan. The Canadian singer performed the song at the Oscars, though the Academy Award eluded her and renowned Toy Story songwriter Randy Newman, despite the Grammy win in the Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media category. McLachlan has released nine studio albums, including 1997’s Surfacing and 2014’s Shine On.
For most other instances, Jessie’s voice is supplied by actress Kat Cressida. An accomplished voice-over artist, Cressida brings her talents to the character in the Disney Infinity video game and theme park attractions like Toy Story Mania!. Additionally, she voiced Dee Dee in Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory.”
