Disney’s iconic Broadway production of “The Lion King” is making its return to Philadelphia after an eight-year hiatus. The national touring production of the beloved musical will grace the stage at the Kimmel Cultural Campus for a nearly month-long engagement.
Featuring a cast that includes three performers from the Delaware Valley, the show is set to captivate audiences with its unique blend of music, acting, and puppetry. One of the cast members, Nick LaMedica, who hails from Newark, Delaware, plays the character “Zazu,” the bird. For LaMedica, “The Lion King” holds a special place in his heart as one of the musicals that inspired his career. He recalls seeing the show as a child and meeting some of the original cast, and he’s excited to be a part of the production years later.
The production’s intricate mask work and puppetry bring the animal characters to life on stage. LaMedica, who has a background in puppetry and animal education, enjoys portraying Zazu with a puppet that is both visually stunning and mechanically complex.
Another cast member, Eric Bean, Jr., an alumnus of the University of the Arts, is eagerly anticipating his performance in his hometown. He has been a part of the touring cast for nearly six years and emphasizes that what audiences see on the road is a faithful representation of the Broadway experience, complete with live singing and the inclusion of South African performers to enhance authenticity.
With a dynamic blend of music, acting, and puppetry, “The Lion King” promises to capture the hearts of audiences as it opens at the Academy of Music on August 16 and continues its run until September 10. This return is a momentous occasion for theatergoers, and it is a fitting celebration of the musical’s enduring impact and legacy.
