Jennifer Lee, known for her successful work on “Frozen” and “Frozen 2,” has decided not to direct Disney’s “Frozen 3,” the next installment in the highly profitable franchise. Speaking at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Lee, who serves as the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, announced that she will be passing on the directorial responsibilities to an as-yet-unnamed successor. Lee is widely regarded as one of Disney’s most talented figures, having also written screenplays for films like “Zootopia” and “Wreck-It Ralph.” The original “Frozen,” which she co-directed with Chris Buck, won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2014. Additionally, Lee has been involved in the upcoming animation “Wish,” featuring Chris Pine and Ariana DeBose.
During her interview, Lee provided limited information about the sequel, which is currently in development. She mentioned that the creative direction for “Frozen 3” did not come from her but from an exceptional individual, whose identity she did not disclose. Lee expressed her excitement about collaborating with this team and acknowledged the studio’s artists who have grown up with the franchise and have a deep connection to it.
Despite stepping back from the director’s role, Lee will still contribute to “Frozen 3” in a consulting capacity. She expressed confidence in the abilities of her colleagues, stating that many of them have been involved with the films since the beginning and share a strong sense of ownership over the franchise.
While Lee may be taking a break from the “Frozen” series, she did not rule out the possibility of future directorial projects with Disney. She mentioned her desire to continue filmmaking and expressed loyalty to the studio.
The release date for “Frozen 3” remains uncertain, as it is one of several franchise sequels greenlit under the leadership of Bob Iger, including “Toy Story 5” and “Zootopia 2.” It is expected that Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez will once again contribute their musical talents to the new sequel.
