Mickey Mouse and friends conquer classic Marvel Comics for Disney’s 100th anniversary

Marvel is gearing up to join in on the grand celebration of The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary in 2023 with an exciting initiative called the Disney100 Variant Cover Program. This program will see Marvel’s beloved characters from the House of Mouse, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and their delightful gang, taking over the covers of Marvel comics throughout the year.

Kicking off in January, the Disney100 Variant Cover Program will make its debut on the pages of the ongoing Amazing Spider-Man series. Fans can look forward to a total of 12 variant covers, with each cover being available in both color and black-and-white versions. The very first cover in this enchanting series, illustrated by the talented Lorenzo Pastrovicchio and colored by Valeria De Sanctis, will grace the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #17, hitting shelves on January 11, 2023.

The inaugural Disney100 cover pays homage to a significant moment in Marvel history—the iconic scene from Avengers #4 (1964) where Captain America assembles Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the first time. It’s a delightful fusion of Disney and Marvel, bringing together two beloved universes in a celebration of their rich legacies.

As the year progresses, fans can anticipate more incredible variant covers paying tribute to classic Marvel comics. In February, the spotlight will shine on Fantastic Four #1 (1961), with Giada Perissinotto and Chiara Di Francia crafting an Amazing Spider-Man #19 variant cover that captures the spirit of the Fantastic Four’s groundbreaking debut. Then in March, the attention turns to Incredible Hulk #1 (1962), as Vitale Mangiatordi and Valeria De Sanctis conjure up an Amazing Spider-Man #21 cover that pays homage to the Hulk’s incredible first issue.

But the excitement doesn’t end there. Newly released covers for the upcoming months include Amazing Spider-Man #23 (April 5) by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio and Chiara Di Francia, channeling the iconic imagery from Infinity Gauntlet #1 (1991). Then, in May, artist Donald Soffritti and colorist Chiara Di Francia bring us Amazing Spider-Man #25, featuring a captivating homage to New Avengers #1 (2004). And in June, get ready for Claudio Sciarrone’s artistic take on Amazing Spider-Man #27, drawing inspiration from Invincible Iron Man #76 (2004).

The Disney100 Variant Program is not just a testament to the enduring partnership between The Walt Disney Company and Marvel Entertainment, which began with Disney’s acquisition of Marvel in 2009. It also showcases the undeniable bond between beloved characters like Spider-Man and Mickey Mouse, who have become cultural icons in their own right.

This thrilling collaboration between Marvel and Disney brings together the magic of Disney’s 100th anniversary and the rich storytelling universe of Marvel comics. It’s a treat for fans of both franchises, allowing them to experience the unique fusion of Disney and Marvel like never before.

So, as the Disney100 Variant Cover Program unfolds throughout the year, make sure to keep an eye out for these captivating covers featuring the iconic characters that have captured the hearts of fans around the world.
