Originally intended to have an epic design befitting its dramatic name, Toriyama streamlined the appearance, giving Goku softer features and magenta hair. While some may consider the Super Saiyan God transformation uninspired compared to later forms introduced in Dragon Ball Super, it represented a significant departure from Goku’s previous transformations at the time of Battle of Gods’ release. The form’s understated appearance, contrasting with Goku’s increasingly overdesigned forms, added an element of surprise and uniqueness.

Furthermore, the Super Saiyan God transformation provided an opportunity for Goku to display an unprecedented level of introspection and self-reflection. Unlike previous power-ups that often came too easily, Goku recognizes that the Super Saiyan God form was obtained through a ritual rather than his usual rigorous training.
